Grass snake playing dead - its a form of anti predator behaviour , but one that is rarely seen, so it was really nice to capture it on this occasion.

You don't see too many of these black (melanic) adders; this is a nicely marked male.

Male smooth newt, shot in the field in a specially built tank with a white diffuser at the rear. Three flash units, two to the top and side and one to the rear to reveal the translucence and detail of this lovely creature.
I came across this hunting grass snake 4' up in a gorse bush, whilst I was out looking for dragonflies. I have not seen this behavior before; you learn something every time you go out!
